EDIT: This game has been postponed due to logistical issues
Far North Queensland’s top women’s football team will face an almighty challenge when Cairns hosts a Groote Eylandt representative team for an exhibition game against the three-time premiership-winning Cairns Saints Women.
The two sides will face off at Watson’s Oval under lights at 7pm on Friday December 9, with the match to be also broadcast live on CluchTV.
The Cairns Saints have been dominant in the AFL Cairns Women’s competition, winning three-premierships in a row. The team has won its past 39 games, going through the past two seasons undefeated.
The team will be supplemented with top-up players from across the AFL Cairns Women’s competition.
Groote Eylandt, located approximately 50km off the east coast of the Northern Territory, is home to a passionate Australian Football community, with participation in Women’s football growing rapidly in recent years.
AFL Cairns Football Operations Manager Ben Carbis says, “this is a fantastic opportunity to grow our football community. Fostering a strong relationship with partners like Groote Eylandt helps to strengthen the game and show off the pool of incredible talent we have in the AFL Cairns Women’s Competition”.
“Hopefully we get a crowd out to Watsons for what should be a cracking game of football”.
