THIS is the moment Cairns Saints junior Jacob Heron has been waiting for all season.
It has become an unusual custom for AFL footballers to be drenched in water and Gatorade by their teammates following their first win in the big-time and the Far North teenager copped his shower on Saturday afternoon in Sydney alongside three teammates.
After playing in three defeats earlier this year, the 18-year-old received his induction into becoming an AFL footballer following the Suns first win over the Swans in nine attempts.
“It was unbelievable,” Heron said.
“It has become a ritual — all the boys in their first win at every club gets it.
“It was an awesome feeling.
“A few of the first year boys had been talking about it and when we would get it.
“To share the moment with three other boys was great, an unforgettable feeling.”
Early on at the SCG on Saturday, it looked as though the Suns lads were going to add to their 11 game losing sequence.
But, the Gold Coast sprung to life as the Suns came from 29 points down at quarter-time to kick 10 goals to two after the first break.
The Swans were held goalless from the end of the first quarter until the final term.
“A lot of people would have written us of before the game and at quarter-time, it looked like we had no chance,” Heron said.
“The boys really dug in and played some great footy over the last three quarters.
“It was a great win to be a part of for our football club.”
Heron kicked his second goal of his career in the win.
The lightning-quick teenager said his side is hoping to build on the come from behind win over Sydney when they face Carlton this weekend.
