Level 1 Trainer Course – Saturday 11th & Sunday, 12th February 2017

As discussed at November’s Presidents Meetin, AFL Cairns have partnered with Category 5 – Health & Emergency Care to facilitate Level 1 & Level 2 Sports Trainers Courses for Season 2017.

AFL Cairns Level 1 Sports Trainers Course for 2017 will be:

  • Saturday, 11th February 2017 – Exact Times & Venue TBC
  • Sunday, 12th February 2017 – Exact Times & Venue TBC

Please SAVE THE ABOVE DATES.

Category 5 – Heath & Emergency Care is a locally based company owned and operated by Jason Taylor. Jason has more than 10 years teaching specific Sports Trainers Courses for Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) and other Sporting Codes.

In previous years, AFL Cairns have tried to engage the services of Sports Medicine Australia (SMA), however have been extremely restricted due to the tyranny of distance (based in Brisbane), requiring unrealistic minimum numbers to conduct courses and their lack of presence here in Cairns.

Category 5 – Heath & Emergency Care Sports Trainers Courses are nationally accredited. Please see below the comparison between Category 5 and SMA:

Category 5 SMA
Level 1 Sports Trainer

2 days duration with some home study which gives more time for practical skills.

Includes HLTAID003- Provide First Aid in the cost

Includes nationally accredited units of competency which can be used to progress towards Level 2 & Cert III

Flexibility with dates & times (nights etc during the season if required rather than weekends)

Cost- $295 (including first aid)

2 days duration- workbook completed during course leaving little time for practical skills.

HLTAID003- Provide First Aid is a pre-requisite and an additional cost

Does not include any nationally accredited units of competency

Inflexible with dates- usually set on weekends mid-season

Cost $305- does not include first aid.

Level 2 Sports Trainer

4 days duration with some home study which gives more time for practical skills.

Includes nationally accredited units of competency which can be used to progress towards Cert III

Flexibility with dates & times (nights etc during the season if required rather than weekends)

Cost $395

4 days duration with workbook completed on course leaving less time for practical skills.

Only includes 1 nationally accredited unit of competency

Inflexible with dates and times mid-season

Cost $400

The upfront difference is that Category 5 – Heath & Emergency Care’s Level 1 includes First Aid and they are cheaper than SMA.
