AFL Cairns 2020 Fixture Release

 4th February 2020

The AFL Cairns competition will start in the last weekend in March 2020. Clubs for the second year will play 16 matches over 19 rounds in a seeded draw.

“The equalization formula introduced in 2019 had a great impact on the back end of the season when six teams could have played finals with three rounds to go and two new teams qualified for finals” said Craig Lees AFL Cairns Football Operations Manager.

Both Seniors and Reserves will play 16 matches due to Pyramid Power not having a team in 2019 and focusing on Juniors and the future of the Gordonvale based Club.

Round 1 will be on Saturday, March 28th featuring reigning premiers Port Douglas v Hawks at Port Douglas, Souths vs Saints at Fretwell Park and North Cairns vs Cairns City Lions at Watsons Oval.

This will be the seventh time the Intrastate battle has been played.

Indigenous Round will be played on Saturday the 23rd of May which aligns Nationally with AFL matches played. Clubs will celebrate our rich Indigenous Culture and community. Dreamtime by the Sea played at Holloways Beach will feature long standing rivals Cairns City Lions v North Cairns.

There are four-night fixtures in 2020, with one of them being played on Friday 17th July Cairns Show Public Holiday at Cazalys Stadium when Manunda Hawks v Cairns City Lions. Reserve grade will play at an earlier timeslot of 4.00pm in a Curtain Opener.

Round 19 the last home and away fixture of the season will be played Saturday the 15th of August with Port Douglas playing at home against Saints for the first time in three years in the last round.
